Q. I’ve recently noticed I’m going a bit thin on top and am really self-conscious about it. Is there anything I can do to make my hair look a bit thicker?

A. Unfortunately, by the age of 35 almost 40% of us will have noticed some degree of hair thinning. That’s the bad news (and one I’m more than familiar with!). The good news, is that there are several things you can do to make what hair you’re still hanging on to look a bit thicker and fuller.

For starters think about getting a haircut. Over the years I’ve asked scores of hairdressers what to do when hair starts thinning and they always say the same thing – go for a shorter, ‘textured’ cut as this will give the illusion of more volume. Hair thickening products like Anthony Logistics Body Building Hair Thickening Shampoo are a good investment too since they contain special polymers which increase the diameter of the hair shafts making your hair look thicker.

Since the last thing you want to do is lose or snap any hairs accidentally, I always recommend patting hair dry rather than rubbing it with a towel and suggest you invest in a good anti-dandruff shampoo if you’re prone to the flakes since studies have shown a link between dandruff and hair breakage (it’s all that scratching).

Finally, think carefully about how you style your hair. To ensue it never looks thin and limp, use hair gels or products like TommyGuns Miraculous Volumising Thickening Styling Mousse rather than heavy gels, which can weight hair down, style with your fingers to add texture and don’t be afraid of using a blow drier (they add volume). Use a cool setting though.

N&J knowledge: In the same way that teeth need health gums, hair needs a healthy scalp so to keep yours healthy eat a diet rich in antioxidant-rich fruit and veg (or take a supplement) avoid getting it burnt by the sun and keep it scrupulously clean.
