The legend, history and tradition:

The Carthusia legend began in 1380 when Queen Giovanna D' Angio' made an unexpected visit to the Carthusian Monastery of St. Giacomo on Capri. The father prior created a flower arrangement for the Queen using flowers from the island. The water in which the flowers were kept was not changed for 3 days and upon throwing it away the prior noticed its fantastically fragrant aroma. Father alchemist then traced the origin of the scent back to the "Garofilium Silvestre Caprese". That water became the first perfume of Capri.

Later, in 1948 the prior of the Monastery re-discovered the old formulas and with the permission of the Pope enlisted the services of a Torino-based chemist and opened the smallest fragrance laboratory in the world, called Carthusia.

Today, traditional methods are honoured. Production is limited and uses the same method as the Carthusian monks of the 14th century. Ingredients are of the highest quality and the end product, hand wrapped.
